Book review

This book exposes a little-known, and legally unexplored, infringement on the human rights of children. Loving parents of emotionally and behaviorally troubled children may be failing to recognize the potential harm that "Gulag" programs can do. For them, as well as attorneys, child welfare officials, and juvenile justice professionals, this book should be an eye-opener.

Alexia Parks has shown us an ugly side of the "youth treatment" world, where children are too often afforded neither dignity nor respect. The stories of these "legal hostage" children should be read by legislators and those responsible for government youth policies. The institutional maltreatment of children described in this book is condemned by international law, so it is time for Americans to ask "What is our government doing about this?"
